Thanks so much for this article. The idea of publishing chapter by chapter didn’t even occur to me and even if it did, I’d be skeptical of its viability. This is so encouraging for someone like me who is itching to publish a book but disillusioned by the current state of the industry. I feel so much more hopeful!
Yes, Chandni. This is very encouraging for bloggers and writers, especially since Google is ripping us all off with their new AI assistant. Put it behind a paywall, set up an optimized page for it, and you’re done! I had no idea about this until I saw Anna’s memoir. This is the power of writing :)
thanks Deni, I was looking into this. Followed you! New to substack here (last week). I write about personal growth and transformation with a spiritual edge. Nice to meet you!
This chapter by chapter idea is becoming more & more interesting by the day. What would you say is around the magic number of subscribers before you embark on that publishing method?
I don’t think you necessarily need subscribers, Shell—especially if your ebook covers a topic people are already searching for. In that case, it’s more about making them aware of your book and directing them to it. There are several ways to do that.
Ah I see. I keep thinking I need to wait, but I have a book written & edited that I want to get out there eventually. I’m not a marketer, so all that is new to me.
That’s very exciting, Shell! Get your book out there. If you publish on Amazon, you might need to invest a bit in advertising to gain traction, unless you already have a dedicated audience. Substack is great for this too! I’ve discovered several accounts here where people are sharing their memoirs, fiction, and non-fiction books that I’ve subscribed to because they really appeal to me. Good luck with your book 🥳.
So it’s a great idea. One thing I struggle with is I find that certain types of books do better on this platform. For example, Substack is a community of writers, so any title helping writers learn how to make money writing do extremely well, because they have a captive audience. Anna’s book is memoir-style I believe, so that’s different, but she has 186k followers on TikTok she’s funneling to Substack to pay. I’m interested to see some other examples of writers using this method who don’t have an extremely large following on another platform and who don’t write about writing.
You’re absolutely right! Anna is promoting her newsletter on TikTok, and it’s a great idea! Anyone who tells you that you don’t need to promote your blogs—either through solid keyword research or on social media, they probably don’t know what they’re talking about.
I promote mine on my instagram and tiktok as well. Instagram is getting more views for me than TikTok, but I'm going to start using Pinterest soon. I believe we chatted about that a while back.
Publishing your book chapter by chapter on Substack is a great idea! Did you have the full book finished or a certain number of chapters completed before you started publishing each chapter?

Of course I did, heavily.
I published one of my books here, chapter by chapter, and got one subscriber!
Did you promote it, Liam?

Hello, Shannon 👋🏼. Nice to meet you. That’s a great topic. I’m very much into that.
wonderful, thank you! Great to meet you for sure.
Thanks for sharing, Deni. Where is the article with the best alternative to KDP platforms to sell your books?
Hello Hein. It’s this one :https://denisahaya.substack.com/p/planning-to-self-publish-your-e-book

Yes, Brittany. Pinterest is great and so is TikTok.

Hello Natasha. I had the outline and half the book completed.
That sounds good, thanks for sharing.
