Every writer wants to earn a living and make enough from their passion to sustain a comfortable life. Period.

But here’s where most go wrong — they chase vanity metrics.

They focus on things that don’t matter and won’t bring in any income.

Things like followers. Or likes, claps, love hearts, and all the cute, fancy reactions others leave on your posts.

For the record, most people don’t engage with your content because they genuinely care. They comment for selfish reasons.

We all know that. And if you didn’t — sorry to burst your bubble.

Let’s now talk about a real problem writers face today. One that’s stealing our valuable resources.

How do you bypass all the fake engagement and get your content in front of the people who genuinely care? The ones who actually need your book, coaching, course, or whatever service you offer?

I was putting together a course on Passive Income: How to Write Books for a Living a few weeks ago. As part of the course, I analyzed hundreds of Amazon books and ebooks on Gumroad across different genres — low-content, self-help, fiction, romance, and more — to identify the top ranking factors.

What I found was surprising.

Many indie bestsellers, especially in the low-content space (like journals), had zero followers, no social media accounts, no website — yet they were selling thousands of copies every month.

How is this possible?

It’s simple.

Let’s break down the key elements and let’s get you earning some real money too.

This next part will be especially helpful if you’re fed up with empty likes, vague comments, and followers who want nothing but free content.
